PROFILE

name:jason peter todd
date of introduction:1983
aliases:robin, hush, red hood, nightwing, red robin, batman, wingman
Jason Todd was the second Robin, first introduced as a circus boy (with a backstory and personality similar to Dick Grayson’s) and then rebooted to be introduced as the character we know nowadays.

WHERE TO START READING

Jason was one of the characters that got completely rebooted once. His Robin run at that time is a pretty fun read, but it’s not relevant to the character right now, as after the crisis everything about him changed and canon doesn’t take it into consideration anymore. However, over the years some issues have been referenced again, making them canon in the current continuity.Order of reading:
- Pre Crisis
- Robin
- After Death
- Red Hood
- New 52
- Rebirth
- Infinite Frontier
ESSENTIAL READING
- Batman #408-#425 + Batman annual #12
- Detective Comics #568-#582
- Batman: the Cult
- Batman: A Death in the Family
- Batman Annual #25
- Red Hood: The Lost Days
- Batman: Under the Red Hood

ROBIN post crisis...

  • Batman #408-#425 (1987-1989) – aka Jason’s original time as Robin post-crisis

  • Detective Comics #568-#582 (1986-1987) – more Jason as Robin! The style is super cute and it’s a pretty lighthearted read. Some got published before the reboot, but remained canon.

  • Blue Devil #19 (1986) – Jason teams up with Blue Devil’s sidekick.

  • Superman annual #11 (1985)– Robin interacting with Wonder Woman and Superman, and [spoiler alert!] saving the day.

  • New Teen Titans #18–#31 (1986-1987) – Donna recruits Jason (among others) to be a team while the original Titans are going through… stuff. A+ Jason characterization.

  • Action Comics #556 &#594 (1987) – Jason meets Superman.

  • Batman Annuals #10-12 (1986-1989)

  • Nightwing Year One #101–106 (2005) – Jason and Dick team up to save Alfred.

  • Legends (1986-1987)

  • Batman: the Cult (1988) – one of the best Robin Jason stories

  • Dc Retroactive: Batman - The 80s (2011)

  • A Death in the Family (1988-1989) – mentioned above as well, we all know what happens here.

  • Deadman: Dead Again (2001) – not Jason centric, but in #2 it deals with the moment of his death and his feelings about it.

  • Batman #430-#435, #496 (1987-1993) – you know those pictures of Ben Affleck looking super sad? That’s it, that’s what happens here. Bruce’s life after his death.

  • New Teen Titans #55 (1988) – Dick finding out about Jason’s death.

  • Batman Annual #13 (1989)

  • Detective Comics Vol 1 #606,609 (1989) – appears in a vision / someone else impersonates Jason and we get to see more of Bruce’s thoughts about his death.

  • Underworld Unleashed #2 (1995) – Neron wants Bruce’s soul in exchange of Jason’s resurrection

  • Batman/Demon (1996) – trigger warnings for gore, body horror, and religion related things. Bruce “visits hell”, and “sees” Jason.

  • Nightwing #10 (1997) – appears as a ghost/hallucination

  • Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #100 (1997) – the main feature is a Dick Grayson origin story, but there’s also a heartbreaking story about Jason’s first and last days as Robin at the back. (The famous “Jason Todd was happy.” Panel come from this comic.)

  • Nightwing: Secret Files and Origins (1999) – only features in the first part.

  • Joker’s Last Laugh, and Joker: Last Laugh Secret Files and Origins (2001) – Jason is mentioned every now and then, and the Secret Files includes a short story that’s very moving and has some Bruce thinking about Jason.

  • Batman: Gotham Knights #16 (2001) – ghost Jason appears on Bruce’s dreams.

  • Batman: Gotham Knights #34 (2002) – again, the main feature isn’t about Jason, but there’s a sad/cute story at the back about his ghost and Alfred.

  • Batman: Gotham Knights #43-45 (2003) – a bit of Jason & Barbara team up, and Bruce dealing with his loss, again.

  • JLA Avengers #2 (2003) – Captain America comments on Jason’s glass case

  • Batman: Gotham County Line (2005) – trigger warnings for zombies, general horror, body horror and eye horror, but this is a really good miniseries with (spoiler alert) tiny zombie Jason

  • Detective Comics #790 (2004) – set during Jason’s birthday. There’s some nice Bruce talking about him with Cass at the end.

  • Batman #626-630 / Batman: As the Crow Flies (2004) [only #629, if you just want to see Jason] – not focused on Jason, but there’s some heartbreaking Jason and Bruce angst towards the end + there’s some neat set-up for the Under the Hood arc too.

RED HOOD post crisis...

  • Hush / Batman #608-619 (2002-2003) – only a few small issues of it involve Jason, but those few issues do act as the initial set-up for the Under the Hood arc (but the jason-centric issue is featured in the batman: under the red hood trade if you only wanna read that)

  • Batman Annual #25 (2006) – ties into the Under the Hood arc, explaining how Jason came back to life (it’s collected into the back of the under the Red Hood trade as well)

  • Red Hood: The Lost Days (2010) – covers the same period between Jason’s resurrection and his return to Gotham as Batman annual #25 but emphasizes more on Jason’s emotional and psychological transition from Robin to the Red Hood. Ignore the last few pages with Talia in the last issue.

  • Batman: Under the Red Hood trade / Batman #635-641, 645-650 (2005-2006) – self explanatory

  • Teen Titans #29 (2005) – it’s not really in character + why people shouldn’t ship him with Tim (besides them being, you know, brothers)

  • World War III #1, 4 (2007)

  • Nightwing: Brothers in Blood - issues #118-122 (2007) – Jason decides to become Nightwing. Dick is not amused.

  • Green Arrow #69-72 (2007) – some more well written Red Hood Jason, set after under the hood.

  • Outsiders #44-46 (2007) – more post-uth Red Hood Jason.

Countdown Event

event information
This arc is a mess which is fifty-one issues long and the plot is very convoluted and characterizations are a little all over the place, but despite that it’s one of the few Jason portrayals that actually doesn’t shit too much on Jason’s character (if you’re willing to forgive a little fluctuation in characterization) and it even provides interesting character development for Jason (which unfortunately no future writer chose to capitalize on)

  • Countdown to Final Crisis #51 (2007)

  • Teen Titans #47 (2007)

  • Countdown to Final Crisis #50-33 (2007)

  • All New Atom #13-15 (2007)

  • Countdown to Final Crisis #32-1 (2007-2008)

  • Countdown Presents: Lord Havok and the Extremists #1 (2007)

  • Countdown Presents: The Search for Ray Palmer (2008)

  • Robin #177, #182-183 (2008 - 2009) – kind of a mess for Jason’s characterization.

  • Azrael: Death’s Dark Knight #3 (2009) – bats!Jason

  • Batman: Battle for the Cowl / Battle for the Cowl: The Underground (2009) – Bruce died and chaos ensues. Probably the worst Red Hood Jason comic.

  • Batman and Robin #3-6+ #23-25 (2009-2011) – another mess.. just to give you an idea on how bad this was, it took elements from pre crisis because what is continuity. #23–#25 is not that bad (as Winick took over and he has a different grip on Jason’s characterization)

New 52 was another world wide reboot, and changed Jason’s origins, personality, and dynamics with other characteres. Some people love it, but it generally wasn’t well received. Just have in mind the only thing they apparently kept from Pre N52 was under the red hood

  • Batman #0 (2012) – some Jason before becoming Robin.

  • Secret Origins #5 – Jason’s origin on n52.

  • Red Hood and the Outlaws #1-14 (2011- 2015) – Jason teams up with Arsenal (Roy Harper) and Starfire (Koriand’r). Here’s the deal: if you are really attached to pre n52 Jason, chances are you’re not gonna like it. It treated Roy and Kory incredibly unfair, and Jason’s character was washed down a lot, but the relationship between the characters + the fanon version of them might be worth it.

  • DC universe Presents #17 (2015) – Roy Harper centered, but has a few Jason panels + shows us how Roy feels about the outlaws.

Death of the Family

event information
The Joker is back and like always, really wants to mess with the batman so he goes after the batfam.

  • Batman #13-15 (2012)

  • RHatO #15 (2012)

  • Teen Titans #15 (2012)

  • Batman #16 (2013)

  • RHatO #16 (2013)

  • Batman and Robin #10-12, #17(2012-2013) – Jason interacting with the Batfam

  • Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #1 (2013)

  • Red Hood and the Outlaws #20-40 (2013-2015)

  • Batman Eternal #10-12,#15 ,#18-20 ,#25 ,#26 ,#28 (2014 - 2015) – typical n52 characterization, and some Jason x Barbara. It’s a good comic to know his position in the batfam and how it differs from his pre n52 counterpart

  • Grayson #12 (2015) – has some good Jason interactions with Dick and Tim.

  • Batman/Superman #25-27 (2014) – Jason, along Batgirl and Nightwing, aid Superman.

  • Red Hood/Arsenal #1-6 (2015) – continuation of RHatO. If you got through that, this is gonna be easy peasy.

  • Batman and Robin Eternal (2015-2016) – another batfam centric comic, particularly on Dick, although it’s where Cassandra got re introduced on the universe so recommended for it. Just don’t expect a constant characterization.

Robin War

event information
Ties in with the We Are Robin and Grayson comics, basically Robins vs. the Court of Owls. Jason’s characterization is pretty good, and the story is really interesting, though the ending was a bit shaky.
